Lahar Inundation Areas

Using two USGS 30 meter DEM's, the rivers shown here were extrapolated using a few tools in ArcMap's Spatial Analyst extension. These rivers can then be used to locate potential lahar inundation areas and as a tool in hazard assessment.

Lahar Hazard Assessment

This map identifies at risk population by US Census block groups and schools within a half mile of streams and rivers located on Mt Hood. In the event of a volcanic event, these areas have the highest probability of being impacted by lahars.

Intro to Python

This is a screen shot of the file folder paths created by running a Python script. This script accomplished in seconds what had been a tedious and time consuming task in the past. I'm kind of excited to learn what else I can do with Python.

Applying GIS to Parcel Management

The GIS application that interests me the most is parcel management. This application falls under Land Administration. The typical problems that are addressed with parcel management are land ownership and parcel boundaries. A local property appraiser uses GIS to relate their Computer Aided Mass Appraisal (CAMA) System to the county’s tax parcels. Utilizing GIS reveals any geographic relationships between tax parcels that would otherwise be impossible for the appraiser detect in a standard DBMS. Parcel management is interesting to me because it is the foundation upon which all other GIS analysis is based. For example if we wanted to determine how many houses in a certain area might be affected by the flooding of a nearby river, we would want to use the information from the CAMA System related to the parcels in the GIS. During the course of this class, and the remainder of this program, I would like to learn more efficient methods and work flows with regard to the CAMA System and GIS.

Analysis of ACT Scores and Participation Rates

Final project complete! This map was created from data obtained from American College Testing. I used proportional symbols to display the median composite score for each state. I also created a choropleth map using each states graduate participation rate.

Google Earth

Google Earth 3D: Downtown Miami, Florida

This is a screenshot of a Google Earth image showing downtown Miami, Florida. This scene was interesting to me because the last time I was in Miami, I had taken a cruise the Eastern Caribbean. One of the things I remembered about Miami was how many cruise ships were at the cruise terminal which can be seen in the middle background. I thought it was neat that the cruise ships are shown in 3D.

Georeferencing, Editing & ArcScene

 UWF Campus with Bald Eagle Protection Area

This map of the UWF Campus shows two rasters that were georeferenced using UWF building polygons. Once georeferenced, I was able to edit the UWF buildings and UWF roads layers adding a new gym and road segment. The protection area was created using the Multiple Ring Buffer tool to add a 330' and a 660' ring around an active Bald Eagle nest near the campus.

This 3D map was created in ArcScene using the same data from the previous map above. A DEM was included to provide ground relief and the buildings were extruded based on their height. A vertical Exaggeration of 5 was applied to help the map appear more 3D.
